Siftables, the toy blocks that think

MIT grad student David Merrill demos Siftables -- cookie-sized, computerized tiles you can stack and shuffle in your hands. These future-toys can do math, play music, and talk to their friends, too. Is this the next thing in hands-on learning?

Game Developer Family Tree

I found an interesting article about game developing companies in Vancouver.

It seems that a lot of them came from EA..

Dedication to retro-gaming

OK, I like my games old-school, but this is dedication (and not necessarily to the StairMaster, either).

oh man!

One of the interesting demonstrations Davies gives is how he added RFID tags to the a copy of the book Cargo Of Eagles (pictured). If you used a reader, they would trigger a specific iTunes playlist as a soundtrack for listening to the book.

What are you projecting?

A really good roundup of how projectors are being used, artfully of course.

[via PSFK]

As projectors continue to become smaller, more powerful and more affordable, artists and communities are discovering new ways for telling stories in unique locations and in unexpected ways. No longer restricted to simply screening pre-recorded films, advances in software are enabling people to tell… Continue

It's Alive

The beauty of using the digital as both tool and medium is the organic quality that the work takes own. Digital artwork can change, react, evolve.

Fouad Hafiz

Evolution of Self

In her talk about the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test, Sondra Norris claimed a person's type remains constant throughout their life. She cited the example of a person who found his/her results shift away from his/her original type, only to have them revert back over time. A few people in class were more than a little offended at the implied notion that one is ultimately unable to change themselves or to shape one's own destiny. The personality… Continue

Warcraft as terrorist planning tool.

The Pentagon and other military spooks are concerned now that virtual worlds will be used to plan terrorist attacks. Here's an article on wired.com to this effect:

Clark Wilson and Ian Grais from Rethink

I really enjoyed and appreciated the all day lecture from Clark Wilson. I took pages and pages of notes. It was especially interesting for me because I had done some research on patents few years back. My friend and I created a special garment that we were going to introduce to the North American market. It was a niche market opportunity so we looked into getting a patent. After seeing that we had to register the patent in each country around the world if we wanted to avoid getting copied, it… Continue

Sweet Tunes

A lot of you asked me about the music we used for our BVW project. The song is called "Salthill" by Canadian artist Tom Fahy. All his work is released for free under a Creative Commons license, which is awesome. I found his stuff off of Jamendo, but I think he posts his work on a bunch of music sites. Anyway, here's the link to the album we took the song from:

Keep It Simple, Stupid

With the prevalence of technology in our lives, complexity is everywhere around us, enveloping us. Long gone are the days when the human race had only to worry about finding non-poisonous food to eat and getting enough heat to stay warm.

Simplicity is a such basic concept that anyone can grasp it with little to no explanation, but yet is perplexingly overlooked when new products, services, and other offering are created.

For example, the interfaces to the PS3 and 360 are… Continue

China: Crackdown on internet addiction

Chinese authorities are concerned that internet addiction is sapping the economic productivity of the nation and are planning to get serious about fighting this modern phenomenon. A recent study commissioned by the Chinese Health Department has labelled internet addiction as a mental disease. The good news is that the report detailing the study’s findings declares that it is treatable and can be cured completely in at least half of its sufferers.

Dr Tao Ran of the health department… Continue

"Branded" Entertainment

For our last BVW project, my team is attempting to create a small piece of branded entertainment that exists across a number of virtual worlds (I will not repeat the brand's name; we're actively managing what related information is being indexed by Google ^_^). The big catch is that the brand we're working with is completely made up; we have all the freedom in the world to shape and mold our brand in whatever way we see fit. Despite this, it still feels incredibly constraining, which makes me… Continue
